General Engineering (A): The Full Scope of Fixed Works
Our Class A license is the backbone of Medici Engineering. Under California law, the A classification covers fixed works requiring specialized engineering knowledge and skill — and we put nearly the whole breadth of it to work for our clients:
Earthwork, Grading & Excavation
Site preparation is where every project succeeds or fails. Our crews handle mass excavation, land leveling, rough and precise grading, cut-and-fill balancing, and compaction — establishing the elevations, drainage slopes, and soil conditions everything else depends on. We work from engineered grading plans and verify with our own field checks, so pads, roads, and utility corridors are right before the first pipe or footing goes in.
Trenching & Underground Construction
Trenching is our daily bread: shored and sloped excavations for utility installation at any depth, in any soil condition — including work near existing utilities where potholing, careful hand exposure, and USA-ticket discipline protect the infrastructure already in the ground. Trench safety is engineered, not improvised: proper shoring, benching, and competent-person oversight on every dig.
Wet Utilities & Pipelines
The core of our engineering practice — sewer, domestic water, reclaimed water, fire water, and storm drainage systems, along with pump stations, concrete drainage structures, and filtration structures. Covered in detail in the sections below.
Drainage & Flood Control
Beyond storm drains, the A classification authorizes flood control work — channels, culverts, headwalls, energy dissipators, levee and embankment work, and erosion protection. We build the systems that move large volumes of water safely away from people and property.
Streets, Roads & Paving
Utility work tears pavement up; engineering contractors put it back better. We perform roadway excavation, base preparation, asphalt paving and surfacing, concrete curb, gutter, and sidewalk, and full trench restoration to agency standards. For private clients we deliver parking lots, access roads, and site paving as standalone projects.
Concrete & Structural Site Work
Cast-in-place concrete in connection with engineering works: drainage structures, vaults, thrust blocks, equipment pads, retaining structures, channel linings, and site flatwork. Formed, placed, and finished by our own crews.
Dry Utilities & Joint Trench
Wet utility contractors dig the trench; electrical contractors fill it. We do both. Medici installs joint trench and conduit systems for power, street lighting, telecom, and signal infrastructure — and because we also hold a C-10 license, the same company that places the conduit can pull the wire and terminate it. One trench, one contractor, one inspection.
Irrigation & Landscape Infrastructure
Irrigation is the first system named in California’s A-license statute, and it’s a natural extension of our water work. We install irrigation mains, laterals, valves, controllers, and recycled-water irrigation systems for parks, medians, streetscapes, HOA common areas, and commercial landscapes — built to agency and water-purveyor standards.
Trenchless & Specialty Installation
Not every pipe can go in from the surface. Where streets, railways, or existing improvements can’t be disturbed, we coordinate and perform trenchless methods — jack-and-bore casings, pipe bursting, and directional drilling — to place new utilities under obstacles instead of through them. Less pavement cut, less traffic disruption, less restoration cost.
Utility Locating & Potholing
Before anyone digs, someone has to know what’s down there. We provide utility investigation services — USA coordination, vacuum-excavation potholing, and utility depth verification — that de-risk design and prevent the strikes that blow up budgets and schedules. Available as a standalone service for engineers and owners in the design phase.
Demolition & Site Clearing
We handle the removals that make way for new work: structure demolition, slab and pavement removal, abandoned utility removal and capping, and site clearing — with proper permits, hauling, and disposal documentation.
Site Development & Public Works
We take on complete site development packages — demolition and clearing, grading, wet and dry utilities, paving, and concrete — as a single scope for developers and public agencies. Parks, playgrounds, and recreational facility sitework fall under our license as well.
Design-Build & Preconstruction Support
The cheapest problems to fix are the ones caught on paper. We support owners and engineers early with constructability reviews, value engineering, budget estimates, and phasing plans — then carry the same team through construction so nothing is lost in the handoff.

Water: Systems That Never Get a Day Off
A community’s water infrastructure has one job: work every single day. Our crews install and service the systems that make that possible — water mains and distribution pipelines, domestic and reclaimed water lines, fire water systems, and the connections that tie them together. We serve both private developers and public agencies, and we back installations with diagnostic and repair capabilities: locating leaks, rehabilitating aging mains, and responding to failures fast enough to keep downtime measured in hours, not days.
Storm Drain: Ready Before the Rain
Drainage is the infrastructure nobody thinks about until it fails. We plan, build, and maintain storm drain systems for private and public projects — from catch basins and concrete drainage structures to full conveyance networks. Our team works with your engineers (or brings design support to the table) to produce drainage that performs when the storm actually arrives, delivered on schedule and within the number we quoted.
Sewer: Wastewater Infrastructure Done Right
Sewer work rewards experience and punishes shortcuts. Medici crews construct and rehabilitate sewer mains, laterals, and collection systems that carry wastewater dependably to treatment. We install and restore manholes, lift stations, and pump stations — the components that determine whether a network performs for five years or fifty. Bypass planning, traffic control, and inspection coordination are handled in-house, so your project keeps moving.
CCTV Sewer Inspection & Diagnosis
We don’t guess at what’s wrong with a sewer line — we look. Our video inspection cameras travel the pipe and show us exactly what’s happening underground: root intrusion, offset joints, bellies, cracks, collapsed sections, or grease blockages. You see the footage, we mark the exact location and depth of the problem, and the repair is scoped precisely — a spot repair where a spot repair works, a replacement only where one is actually needed.
Sewer Repair & Replacement
From a single broken lateral section to a full line replacement, we perform open-trench and spot repairs with proper bedding, backfill, and compaction — restored to grade and inspected. Where conditions favor it, trenchless methods like pipe bursting let us replace a failed line with minimal excavation.
New Sewer Connections & Laterals
Every new structure needs a path to the main — and this is where most builders call us. We install new sewer laterals and tie-ins for ADUs, new homes, and commercial buildings, including saddle connections to the city main, cleanouts, and backwater valves where code requires them. For ADU projects, we handle the connection question early so it never stalls your permit or your build.
Manhole Connections & Structures
Connecting to an existing manhole is precision work: core-drilling the barrel, setting the connection, re-channeling the flow line, and sealing it watertight — all to city standards and under inspection. We also set new manholes, rehabilitate deteriorated ones, and adjust frames and covers to grade during paving projects.
Sewer Main Extensions
When a property sits beyond the reach of the existing public sewer, we build the main out to it — plan check and permits with the city, traffic control, excavation and installation, manhole placement, testing, and final acceptance by the agency. One of the most demanding scopes in residential development, and one of our strongest.
Work in the Public Right-of-Way
Working in the public right-of-way is its own discipline. Medici is experienced with excavation permits, agency plan requirements, traffic control plans, shoring in roadway sections, working around existing utilities, and restoring pavement to city standards.
Emergency Line Breaks — Private & Public
A burst water or sewer line doesn’t wait for business hours, and when it’s flooding a street it becomes a public problem fast. Our crews respond to main breaks and lateral failures on private property and in the public way — emergency excavation, isolation and repair, and street restoration — around the clock. See our Emergency Services page.
Stormwater Retention: Holding Water Where It Belongs
Modern stormwater rules demand more than a pipe to the street. We build retention and detention systems — basins, subsurface storage, infiltration systems, and green infrastructure like permeable paving and bioswales — that satisfy regulators and protect neighboring property. We also maintain them: sediment removal, erosion control, and vegetation management to keep systems compliant year after year.
Electrical (C-10): Power, In-House
Here’s where Medici differs from a typical wet utility contractor: we hold a C-10 Electrical license. Our electricians install and connect the systems that generate, transmit, and use electrical power — service panels and switchgear, conduit and raceway systems, site and street lighting, pump station power and controls, EV charging infrastructure, and solar photovoltaic connections. On combined projects, that means the trench, the conduit, and the wire come from one accountable contractor.
General Building (B): Structures That Complete the Job
With our General Building classification, Medici takes on structures and multi-trade projects — utility buildings, enclosures, tenant improvements, and commercial construction requiring coordinated trades. For clients, the value is simple: the same company that puts the utilities in the ground can build what stands on top of it.
ADUs: From Bare Ground to Move-In Ready
Accessory Dwelling Units are one of the smartest investments a Los Angeles property owner can make — and one of the trickiest to build well, because an ADU is really three projects in one: sitework, structure, and utilities. Most ADU builders subcontract the parts that live underground. We don’t have to. Medici handles the complete ADU package in-house:
Site & Foundation
Grading, excavation, and foundation work under our A license, done right on sloped or tight lots where other builders struggle.
Utility Connections
New sewer laterals, water service upgrades, and drainage — often the biggest hidden cost in an ADU project, and our core specialty.
Structure & Finish
Ground-up construction or garage conversion under our B license: framing, roofing, and coordinated finish trades.
Electrical Service
Panel upgrades, new subpanels, and full unit wiring under our own C-10 license — no waiting on a third-party electrician.
Detached, attached, or garage conversion, we manage plans, permits, and inspections through final sign-off, and we quote the whole scope up front — including the underground work other bids conveniently leave out.
Los Angeles ADU Requirements at a Glance
Wondering if your property qualifies? Under current California and City of Los Angeles rules, the answer is almost always yes:
Lot size: No minimum lot size — state law prohibits cities from requiring one. If you have a house, you can almost certainly have an ADU.
Unit size: Detached ADUs up to 1,200 sq ft in Los Angeles; every jurisdiction must allow at least 800 sq ft. Attached ADUs may be limited to 50% of the main home’s size.
Setbacks: Just 4 feet from side and rear property lines for new detached units. Garage and accessory-structure conversions that keep the existing footprint need no new setbacks at all.
Height: At least 16 feet allowed for detached units (18 feet near major transit or on multifamily lots; up to 25 feet for attached ADUs), with LA residential zones often permitting more.
Parking: Usually none required. Parking is waived within a half-mile of public transit and in several other situations; where it applies, the max is one space, and a tandem driveway spot counts.
Permits: The City must approve or deny a complete application within 60 days. Typical LA permit fees run roughly $4,000–$15,000 depending on size and type.
Occupancy: No owner-occupancy requirement for standard ADUs — you can rent out either unit.
We confirm the exact rules for your address, prepare the plans, and carry the permit through LADBS so you never sit in a plan-check line.
Requirements current as of 2026 and subject to change — we verify against the latest state and city standards on every project.
Emergency Services: One Call, Any Hour
Water main breaks, sewer failures, storm damage, and power emergencies don’t schedule appointments. Our on-call crews respond 24/7 with the equipment and licenses to fix the problem — not just diagnose it.
Around-the-Clock Dispatch — A live person, not a voicemail, any hour of any day.
Full-Trade Response — Licensed A, B, and C-10, one crew handles the pipe, the structure, and the power.
